The BestofCluck.com Story

BestofCluck.com started as a simple idea from our founder, Devon Minnema. At the time, he was a sophomore in high school and owned three chickens that he and his produce farmer father kept in their suburban backyard. Minnema liked the ‘economy’ of owning one’s own chickens and saw his hens more as pets since he had raised them with his father from day-olds. He liked that the chickens provided pest control, eggs, and even lawn care. He cared for his chickens in the most logical ways, but was never sure if he was doing things right. The internet yielded less-than-satisfactory answers to his questions and the concept was born: Set up a website that just tells you how to raise the chickens and doesn’t obnoxiously try to hawk physical products at you.

One year later, Minnema (now a senior in high school) had finally saved up enough money to start construction of the new site. In order to save up, he had loaded trucks, fabricated and marketed farm equipment from his high school’s shop class, and even set up his own summertime fresh produce venture with almost two acres of corn, tomatoes, bell peppers, and cucumbers. It was February of 2012 and between what he had saved and the venture capital his father offered him, it was time to call up The Market Aces, LLC and start construction. The site still had no name, though, and Minnema ran the idea past his journalist mother.

Two days after bouncing the idea off his mom, Minnema was leaving the house for school after informing his mom that he had a big English test. “Best of luck!” she said as he was heading out the door. He froze and immediately knew what the name of the site would be; “BestofCluck.com.”
